Cadela Carlota has been caring for abandoned dogs and cats in the area of Lagos in the Algarve, Portugal, since 2008.

We are concerned with the animals´ welfare, health, safety and quality of life.

The dogs and cats we care for have been abandoned and ignored and require affection and a family to call their own.

The entire team, including many volunteers, are working tirelessly every day to provide individual care, comfort, training and love to each animal.

Our ultimate goal, however, is to find a caring human who will give the animal his or her forever home.

Cadela Carlota needs a new cat shelter!

Alongside its daily activities — which include the important mission of caring for more than 150 cats and dogs — Cadela Carlota also develops projects aimed at improving the welfare of the animals under its care. The main project for the 2025–2027 period is the construction of a new shelter for cats, a vital step toward providing better conditions and quality of life for the felines in our care.

WHY do we need a new cat shelter?

Our time on land owned by the city of Lagos will come to an end soon. The city will be redeveloping the public space where the cat shelter is now located. The city has also started the expansion of the Lagos municipal kennel. However, this increased capacity will not fully meet the needs of the area we are serving. Once the Lagos municipal kennel is completed, the relocation of our cat shelter will be imminent.

WHAT will the shelter look like?

Phase 1 of the project: consist of an outer metal industrial shell constructed in alignment with the land regulations. Includes access to plumbing and electricity to guarantee ongoing cleaning and disinfecting of all areas.

It will allow us to:

• have space to accommodate increased need, up to 100 cats

• provide indoor and outdoor spaces to care for injured, sick, recently spayed cats as well as mothers and kittens and healthy cats waiting for adoption

• provide separate quarantine areas for contagious diseases to avoid the spread of disease

Phase 2: the addition of a dedicated sanctuary for feral cats, who are unable to survive in the wild due to injury or disease. These feral cats cannot co-exist with the current shelter colony.
