ARA – Animal Rescue Algarve

We are a non-profit association that aims to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome dogs and cats in need of help. Our shelter houses one hundred dogs and fifty cats, under the care of a team of twelve full-timers and with the extra attention of resident volunteers. We work directly with two volunteers’ platforms, Workaway and World Packer’s. We provide accommodation for around 21 volunteers who, in return, help us every day with everything from walks to cleaning and socialising. The shelter operates with rules that allow it to run smoothly, all the animals receive veterinary treatment, the shelter has quarantines, common areas such as laundry and kitchen and we have fifteen large fenced areas where the dogs can spend their days free, with access to sandboxes, swimming pools and nature. We have no government support, we survive on private donations and with the help of our charity stores, which are run solely by volunteers. In addition to our work at the shelter, we are also very active in the community, carrying out sterilization projects for street cats and going to schools and homes to raise awareness. We hold events in various areas of the Algarve where we promote responsible adoption, among other events that help the association.
