Museu do Côa

The vast open-air rock art collection of the Côa Valley, which sets aside the old myth of Paleolithic art enclosed in caves, can be appreciated in the Museum’s exhibition through art originals, replicas of scribe drawings and digital interactive information. The originals can only be viewed on guided ‘expeditions’.
Inaugurated in 2010, the Côa Museum was designed by Camilo Rebelo and Tiago Pimentel, a team of architects from Porto. Its design departs from the notion that “Paleolithic art in the Côa Valley is perhaps the first manifestation of ‘Land art’“.
Being one of the largest Portuguese museums, it sits gracefully at the top of the mouth of the Côa River, celebrating the meeting of the two world heritage listings in the region: the Prehistoric Art of the Côa Valley and the Douro Wine Landscape.

Die umfangreiche Felskunstsammlung des Côa-Tals, die sich unter freiem Himmel befindet und mit dem alten Mythos der in Höhlen eingeschlossenen paläolithischen Kunst aufräumt, kann in der Ausstellung des Museums anhand von Originalen, Repliken von Ritzzeichnungen und digitalen interaktiven Informationen besichtigt werden. Die Besichtigung der Originale ist ausschließlich über geführte „Expeditionen“ möglich. Das 2010 eingeweihte Côa-Museum wurde von Camilo Rebelo und Tiago Pimentel, einem Architektenteam aus Porto, entworfen. Sein Entwurf geht von der Vorstellung aus, dass „die paläolithische Kunst im Côa-Tal vielleicht die erste Manifestation der ‚Land Art‘ ist“. Als eines der größten portugiesischen Museen liegt es anmutig an der Mündung des Côa-Flusses und vereint die beiden Welterbestätten in der Region: die prähistorische Kunst des Côa-Tals und die Weinlandschaft des Douro.
