Located in the north-west of Portugal, the Ave Basin is an area strongly characterised by the cotton textile industry, and the first modern textile factory was founded in 1845 in Negrelos, Vila das Aves. One of the main reasons for the flourishing of the industry in the Ave Basin was the utilisation of hydraulic energy to power the factories. Since then, the textile industry has been its main economic activity – mainly in the municipalities of Fafe, Guimarães, Vila Nova de Famalicão and Santo Tirso – and it is currently the most important textile region in Portugal.
The Ave Basin Textile Industry Museum was founded in 1987 as an industrial archaeology research project, with the aim of studying the industrialisation process in this region and contributing to the preservation of its industrial heritage.

Das im Nordwesten Portugals gelegene Ave-Becken ist ein Gebiet, das stark von der Baumwolltextilindustrie geprägt ist. Die erste moderne Textilfabrik wurde 1845 in Negrelos, Vila das Aves, gegründet. Einer der Hauptgründe für das Aufblühen der Industrie im Ave-Becken war die Nutzung der Wasserkraft für den Antrieb der Fabriken. Seitdem ist die Textilindustrie der wichtigste Wirtschaftszweig – vor allem in den Gemeinden Fafe, Guimarães, Vila Nova de Famalicão und Santo Tirso – und die Region ist heute die wichtigste Textilregion in Portugal. Das Textilindustriemuseum des Ave-Beckens wurde 1987 als industriearchäologisches Forschungsprojekt mit dem Ziel gegründet, den Industrialisierungsprozess in dieser Region zu untersuchen und zur Erhaltung des industriellen Erbes beizutragen.
