Opened in 2022, the Miradouro dos Piornos is located at the epicentre of a dazzling landscape of glacial valleys in Serra da Estrela.
This 1630 meters-high belvedere is a must-see attraction of the region of Covilhã. “Piorno” is the Portuguese name for broom.
This new viewpoint was built on the slope of a granite tor, offering a unique and inspiring landscape shaped by ancient glaciers. From this site we get a good perspective of the main aspects of the glaciation of the eastern sector of the Serra da Estrela. We are close to the limit between the areas with and without Pleistocene glaciers. At the height of glaciation, glaciers occupied the whole area visible to the west, with the Torre plateau being an area of snow accumulation, from which several glacial tongues flowed out, channelled in the main valleys.
The metallic structure was adapted to the characteristics of the soil, fitting harmoniously into the landscape, seeking to minimise its impact on the site. It now appears as a new safe and comfortable balcony for visitors to observe the Nave de Santo António and the western plateau.

Der 2022 eröffnete Miradouro dos Piornos liegt im Zentrum einer atemberaubenden, von Gletschertälern geprägten Landschaft in der Serra da Estrela.
Dieser 1630 Meter hohe Aussichtspunkt ist eine der Hauptattraktionen der Region Covilhã. „Piorno“ ist der portugiesische Name für Ginster.
Diese neue Aussichtsplattform wurde an einem Granithang errichtet und eröffnet den Blick auf eine einzigartige und inspirierende, von Gletschern geformte, Landschaft. Von hier aus hat man einen guten Überblick über die wichtigsten Merkmale der Vergletscherung des östlichen Teils der Serra da Estrela, nahe der Grenze zwischen den Gebieten mit und ohne pleistozäne Gletscher. Auf dem Höhepunkt der Vergletscherung nahmen diese das gesamte im Westen sichtbare Gebiet ein, wobei die Hochebene von Torre ein besonders schneereiches Gebiet war, aus dem mehrere Gletscherzungen abflossen, die schließlich in die Haupttäler mündeten.
Die Metallkonstruktion des Aussichtspunktes wurde an die Bodenbeschaffenheit angepasst, fügt sich harmonisch in die Landschaft ein und hat nur einen minimalen Einfluss auf das Gelände. Jetzt bietet sie den Besuchern eine neue, sichere und bequeme Plattform, von der aus sie die Nave de Santo António und die westliche Hochebene bewundern können.
