This is an open-air ecomuseum, always open, which brings us into direct contact with the history and practice of salt and salted products from Aveiro. Several interpretive plaques guide us through life in the salt pans (marinha), both the marnotos who still work here producing and extracting salt, and the biodiversity that is found here. This is a living space that changes according to the seasons and the time of day. However, the ‘salt making’ time is between June and September. The marnotos continue to use only wooden utensils, so as not to adulterate the genuine flavour of the salt through contact with metal, extracting sea salt and fleur de sel of excellent quality.
